Portrait of Eunjoon Lee
· Eunjoon Lee · Kyungil University

Filmmaker, media artist,
scholar of the moving image.

Eunjoon Lee directs AI films and makes AI media art at the intersection of generative systems, visual philosophy, and Korean contemporary culture. As Assistant Professor in the Department of Photography & Moving Image at Kyungil University — a department founded in 1988 and one of Korea’s leading photography programs — she teaches and researches at the seam between the camera and the model: what it means to author an image when the lens has been replaced by a weight matrix.

Her recent films have collected awards on three continents, including Best Dark Comedy at the Los Angeles Film Awards, Best Comedy at the New York International Film Awards, and Best Female Director (Super Short) at the Cannes World Film Festival. Her media-art work has been commissioned by the Korean National Symphony Orchestra and exhibited at the Seoul Arts Center, Purdue University's Rueff Gallery, and invitational shows in Shenyang and Shandong.

She also writes the ongoing bilingual column "Scrutinizing AI" at the Yonhap News Agency — Korea’s national wire service — published in both Korean and English on the K-VIBE platform. The column reads emerging AI through the lens of visual media, art history, and creative philosophy, with coverage spanning U.S./Korean AI policy, university curriculum reform, the analog revival in K-pop, and the question of authorship in the age of generative systems.

02 Statement Artistic · Research · Pedagogical

I. Practice: A new cinematic language

I make AI-native films and moving-image works. By AI-native I mean a cinema whose grammar — its shot logic, performance, mise-en-scène, the very texture of a face caught at 24 fps — is built from the ground up using generative systems, rather than retrofitting AI onto a conventional production. The premise is not that AI replaces the filmmaker; it is that it produces a different kind of filmmaker, one whose authorship lives in prompt, reference, iteration, and curation as much as in casting and blocking.

The three films currently anchoring this practice — Crazy Cindy (2026), Diner Date (2024), and Memory Market (2024) — have collected more than a dozen international awards across the United States, France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom. What the jury statements repeatedly notice is something I plan for: that the film “cleverly uses the limitations of AI filmmaking to its advantage.” I treat AI’s glitches not as failures to suppress but as material to compose with — the way early cinema once treated the jitter of the hand-cranked camera or the grain of nitrate stock.

II. Research: AI as art-historical event

My scholarly writing situates this moment within the longer history of how technology has produced new art. The nineteenth-century portable camera pushed Monet out of realism and into Impressionism; the generative model is doing something analogous to twenty-first-century image-making. My column at the Yonhap News Agency — ten English- language essays and counting, distributed bilingually through Korea’s national wire service — threads this argument across topics ranging from the San Francisco Misalignment Museum to NewJeans’ analog music videos to the EveR 6 humanoid robot conducting at the National Theater of Korea.

The throughline is a question that I think university departments of photography and moving image have not yet answered with any precision: what should we teach, tomorrow morning? If the camera is no longer the irreducible site of capture, what should a curriculum even look like? My peer-reviewed publications on AI art ethics, AR activation, and the keywords of Asian art culture are early attempts to map this terrain.

III. Pedagogy: Teaching at the seam

As Assistant Professor in Kyungil University’s Department of Photography & Moving Image — a department founded in 1988 and one of Korea’s longest- running programs in the field — I teach video production, AI moving-image practice, and the theory that frames both. My approach to teaching has been recognized at Yonsei University with the Outstanding Teaching Award (2023). I work with students to build a craft that is fluent in both traditional cinema language and the generative toolkit, and to produce festival-ready films from inside a curriculum that is still being written.

I am most interested in students who treat AI the way good filmmakers have always treated their tools: with curiosity, discipline, and a refusal to mistake the instrument for the art.

03 · Method

How the films get made

A director's workflow, not a prompt lottery. Every film begins on paper and ends in the edit — the model sits in the middle, under direction.

01
Design before generation

Mood boards, references, and the emotional arc are fixed first — a clear plan that controls the model's natural unpredictability rather than chasing it.

02
Prompt as cinematography

Shot grammar written as language: waist shot to mid shot to close-up, slow motion, whip cut. Camera movement, lighting, and gesture are specified the way a cinematographer would call them.

03
Iterate & curate

Generate, select, refine. Character coherence and micro-expressions are tuned across passes — the director's eye decides what survives.

04
Compose the beat

Edit, sound, and voice-over timing are cut to an emotional beat — comic rhythm, tension, release — where the film finally becomes a film.

Diner Date

Produced & Directed by Eunjoon Lee · USA × Korea · 2024

An AI film that uses the "kissing frogs to find the prince" metaphor to chart a fast, funny, and surprisingly tender romantic-comedy arc — entirely through generative tools.

"A charming and witty short that creatively explores the classic 'kissing frogs to find the prince' metaphor. Despite some glitches and imperfections, the film cleverly uses the limitations of AI filmmaking to its advantage, delivering a fast-paced and relatable story. The protagonist's emotions are well-captured, making his mismatched interactions funny and engaging. Coupled with upbeat music, the film feels fresh, entertaining, and delightful." — AI International Film Festival · Jury Statement · March 2026

Diner Date collected multiple international awards: Best International Short at the AI International Film Festival (March 2026), Best Female Director — Super Short Film at the Cannes World Film Festival, Best AI Short at the metaMorph AI Film Award, and Best AI Film — "Miró" at the Barcelona Planet Film Festival.

Memory Market

Directed by Eunjoon Lee

A moodier counterpart to Diner Date — cooler palette, urban ground, a young man whose interior life pulls the camera in. Where Diner Date is a romantic comedy of mismatched encounters, Memory Market sits with a single subject and asks what a memory is when the image of it can be generated, traded, and re-encountered.

“My new film, Memory Market, already utilized more advanced AI — enabling greater control over character coherence and emotional nuance, with refined micro-expressions and nuanced gestures to deepen the storytelling.” — metaMorph AI Film Award interview · 2025

Concrete, water, vermilion

A series of AI-generated moving-image studies extending the vocabulary of Vermilion Threshold into time. Each piece is a brief architectural meditation — red fabric or fluid moving through concrete vessels, sunlight on water, mineral and motion. Together they form an experimental body of work on what generative video does to the still image, the sculptural object, and the long horizon of the sea.

Beats, composed and released

Beyond film and media art, Eunjoon Lee produces and releases electronic music under two artist identities. BeatClique — “promoting producer productivity” — is the primary project, with a catalog of releases streaming on Spotify. KikiPop is the secondary pop-oriented project, and the music videos are published on the Peaches Studio YouTube channel. This long-standing practice in electronic music and sound design directly informs the rhythmic and emotional structuring of the films.

Scrutinizing AI.

이은준의 AI 톺아보기 · Lee Eun-jun’s ongoing column at Yonhap News Agency · K-VIBE

A long-running public column at the Yonhap News Agency, Korea’s national wire service, published in both Korean and English on the K-VIBE Hallyu & K-culture platform. The column reads emerging AI through the lens of visual media, art history, and creative philosophy — tracing how generative systems are reshaping authorship, education, policy, and the very idea of the image.

Topics span Impressionism and AI art, the U.S./Korean AI policy landscape, university curriculum reform, robot conductors at the National Theater of Korea, the San Francisco Misalignment Museum, the analog revival in K-pop music videos, the rise of the participatory storyteller, and the question of what authorship means when the image arrives by way of a model.

“AI is no gimmick.

On art, technology, and winning the metaMorph Award for Diner Date

“This award means a great deal to me personally and philosophically. As a professor and filmmaker, I have dedicated years to exploring how emerging technologies reshape not just the making of art but also how we perceive and experience it. Receiving recognition for Diner Date feels like validation that AI-native storytelling is no gimmick. It’s an entirely new cinematic language.”

“We are witnessing the birth of a new grammar of emotion, rhythm, and visual logic. This is not just about AI as a tool; it’s about reimagining what it means to tell a human story in an age of post-human creativity.”

“My vision didn’t simply change. It was sharpened and strengthened by learning how AI works and what its limits are. From the start, I approached the project with a clear plan, setting moods and references carefully to control AI’s natural unpredictability. Rather than letting AI dictate the film, I maintained full creative direction, using AI as a flexible tool.”
